Residential Houses ‘Am Markt’

Am Markt was the former centre of a village in northern Germany. As the village centre had shifted and the owners’ generation changed, the trading business that had run there for decades was not continued, and the existing commercial building was to be replaced by new apartments.

The preliminary design takes up the characteristic features of local architecture: red brickwork and gable roofs, as found in many buildings nearby, including the existing one. Details such as a partial façade of ceramic blocks and areas of rotated brickwork are derived from them. Six terraced houses provide homes for small families, couples and single people.
